Looking for a landscaper in Newcastle? These are the ten local landscapers with the strongest Google reviews. We ranked them on their rating and on how many reviews back it up.

Why it counts. A perfect score from a few reviews is a start. A strong score from a hundred is a track record. Our order gives the track record more weight.

Our view. Review counts run from 18 to 132, and most of the scores are close. Two of the ten hold a licence we could match on the NSW register, so ask for the licence number before you sign anything over $5,000.
Landscape design or landscape construction?
Some landscapers in Newcastle only draw the plan, some only build, and many do both. Landscape design covers the layout, the plants, the paths and how water drains off the site.
Landscape construction is the building part: retaining walls, paving, decks, garden beds, turf and irrigation. If you are getting a design from one business and the build from another, give both the same drawing so the quotes compare like with like.

Retaining walls and approvals
Structural landscaping is its own licence category in NSW for residential jobs over $5,000 (NSW Government, categories of work). A retaining wall can be exempt from planning approval, but only when it meets the state rules.
Among other things, it must not redirect surface water or ground water onto a neighbouring block, must sit at least 2 m from any other retaining wall on the site, and must be at least 40 m from a natural body of water (NSW Planning, earthworks and retaining walls). Heritage items need approval too.
If your wall will hold back a lot of soil, ask the landscaper or the council which approval it needs before work starts.
The catch. An exempt wall still has to be built well. Ask who designs the drainage behind it, because water building up behind a wall can push it over.
Check the licence before you pay anything
