Hunter Water or a plumber?
Maitland is on Hunter Water's supply network (Hunter Water, what we do), and knowing who owns which pipe can save you a call-out fee.
As the property owner, you are responsible for the pipes and fittings within your property from where your water system connects to the main (Hunter Water, about your water service).
Hunter Water may maintain your service between the main and the water meter, up to and including the path tap, as long as it meets their connection standard. A leak on your side of the meter, or damage not caused by Hunter Water, is a job for a licensed plumber at your own cost.
Plumbing, draining and gasfitting need a licence in NSW whatever the job costs, whether the work is residential, commercial or industrial (NSW Government, plumbing licences).
When the work is finished, your plumber must complete a Certificate of Compliance and give a copy to the person who arranged the work (NSW Government, plumbing inspection documents).
For work that needs an inspection in Newcastle and the Hunter, the plumber also lodges a Notice of Work with Building Commission NSW before starting. Small jobs, such as replacing tapware or swapping an existing hot water system, do not need that notice.
The catch. A certificate shows the plumber has signed off the work. It does not replace a written quote, so agree the price before they start.
Check the licence before you pay anything
The NSW Government's free check shows whether a licence is current and what work it covers.
When you call, say what the problem is and when it started. A hot water system that has stopped, a blocked drain, or water coming through a ceiling each needs different tools, and a good plumber will ask questions before driving out. For emergency plumbing after hours, ask for the call-out fee and the hourly rate before they come.
