Looking for a tiler in Newcastle? These are the ten local tilers with the strongest Google reviews. We ranked them on their rating and on how many reviews back it up.
How many Google reviews back each rating on this list, read 29 October 2026.
Why it counts. A perfect score from a few reviews is a start. A strong score from a hundred is a track record. Our order gives the track record more weight.
The ten best-reviewed tilers in Newcastle
Scores were read on 29 October 2026. Ratings move, so check the Google profile before you call.
Our view. Review counts run from 13 to 39, so the order can shift with a handful of new reviews. Four of the ten hold a licence we could match on the NSW register. With scores this close, shortlist two or three tilers and compare written quotes for the same tiles and layout.
Bathroom tiling: the waterproofing comes first
In a bathroom renovation, the tiles are the part you see, but the waterproofing membrane under them is what keeps water out of the walls and floor.
Wall and floor tiling and waterproofing are separate licence categories in NSW, and each is needed for residential work worth more than $5,000 (NSW Government, categories of work). Kitchen, bathroom and laundry renovation is a category of its own too, for the business that runs the whole job.
Ask every tiler who will do the waterproofing, whether it is in the price, and whether you will get a written certificate for it when the job is done.
If the tiler brings in someone else for the membrane, ask for that business's name and licence number as well.
The catch. A beautiful tile job can still leak if the membrane under it was rushed. You cannot see it once the tiles are on, so ask how it is tested.

Floor tiles, wall tiles and outdoor tiling
Most Newcastle tilers do floor tiling, wall tiling and bathroom tiles, and many also do kitchen tiling and outdoor tiling. The job changes with each.
Floor tiles. The floor must be flat before a tile goes down. Ask whether the quote includes levelling, and what happens if the old floor is uneven once it is exposed.
Wall tiles and splashbacks. Small kitchen splashbacks are often a half-day job. Feature walls with large-format tiles take longer, because big tiles need a flatter wall.
Shower recesses. The floor needs a steady fall to the drain, and the corners need the most care with the membrane. Ask whether the tiler builds the fall in the screed or relies on a pre-formed base.
Outdoor tiling. Patios, pool surrounds and balconies get wet, so ask for a tile with a slip rating suited to outdoor areas and for the fall the tiler will build in so water runs off.

What changes the price
Tiling quotes in Newcastle vary more than most trades, because so much depends on the room. These are the things that usually move the price:
Tile size and shape. Very large tiles, small mosaics and patterns such as herringbone take longer to lay than standard tiles.
Removing the old tiles. Stripping and disposing of old tiles and adhesive is slow, dusty work. Check it is in the quote.
Preparation. Screeding a floor, sheeting a wall or fixing a soft subfloor adds time before any tile goes on.
Waterproofing and trims. Membranes, edge trims, niches and shower screens are often listed separately.
Who supplies the tiles. Some tilers buy them, some ask you to, and some charge a fee for tiles you supply.
Ask for a price for the whole job, not just a rate per square metre, so you can compare quotes properly.
Older bathrooms and kitchens
If your home was built before the late 1980s, the flooring, walls or sheeting in a bathroom or kitchen may contain asbestos (SafeWork NSW, asbestos). Tell the tiler before they lift old tiles or cut the walls, and ask how they will test for it. More than 10 square metres of bonded asbestos must be removed by a licensed asbestos professional.
Check the licence before you pay anything
The NSW Government's free check shows whether a licence is current and what work it covers.
On a tiling job worth more than $5,000 including GST, your tiler must give you a written contract, and jobs above $20,000 need a large job contract (NSW Government, contracts). The deposit is capped at 10 per cent of the contract price.
If the whole renovation is over $20,000, the business you sign with must hold home building compensation cover, so ask to see the certificate before you pay.
A checklist for your tiling quote
The tile name, size and supplier, and how many square metres are allowed for.
Whether waterproofing is included, who does it, and the certificate you will get.
The prep work: removing old tiles, levelling, sheeting and trims.
Grout colour and whether the tiles will be sealed.
Who removes the rubbish at the end.
A start date and how long the room will be out of use.
If something goes wrong later
Cracked grout or a drummy tile in the first few weeks is worth a call back to the tiler straight away. A leaking shower is more serious.
For residential building work done under a contract signed on or after 1 February 2012, NSW law gives a statutory warranty of 6 years for major defects and 2 years for all other defects (NSW Government, resolving building disputes). Keep the contract, the invoice and the waterproofing certificate together so you can show what was done.
